Coming to Light

An anthology of modern translation of Native American literature from nearly 40 different groups. This book grew out of the frustration of its editor who, in trying to teach Native American oral literatures, discovered that existing texts lacked crucial cultural and historical context. Furthermore, stories were unreliably translated, and several tales from different languages and cultures were run together, or rewritten, retranslated, and adapted without any knowledge of or credit given to the original narrator or language.
