Song of Songs

Song of Songs is one of the holy books of the Old Testament, the Christian-Jewish scriptures. It is also a classical work of ancient literature that continues to be studied, read and prayed the world over. Song of Songs is essentially a poem, a collection of sensual love poems. Its inclusive in the holy scriptures can be surprising and even shocking to some; besides its sensual and at times erotic nature it does not even mention God or religion. Yet, its relevance to this day goes unchallenged. What is the depth and meaning behind this ancient masterpiece? How can we read and understand it today? Throughout history it has been read and understood in various ways. Sometimes it has been seen as an allegory of Israel and god, or Jesus Christ and His church.
